- The Value of Pharmacy Data - June 13, 2022
Why is Pharmacy Data so Important?
Independent pharmacy data is important because they are the only organizations in the US who can provide longitudinal data on communities that includes prescription medications, provider information, over the counter drugs and vitamins, and adverse drug reactions for entire families.
Why is Pharmacy Data Difficult to Find?
Historically, pharmacy data has been a challenge to identify and secure due to the lack of standardization within the facilities. This is an ongoing issue for many data scientists looking to acquire medication data, however times are changing with interoperability and the services rendered being enhanced.
No longer will pharmaceutical companies be able to rely on PBMs for their data. Now that the pharmacies have realized the value in their data, as well as the value in enhancing service lines, they are in a unique position to take back control of their data for the first time in US history.
A New Era of Pharmacy Data Post COVID-19
Throughout the Pandemic, pharmacies have learned that they play much larger role than just pharmacists. A trend that is spreading across the nation is POC testing at the pharmacy level. This began with the introduction of COVID Antigen and Antibody testing, and eventually COVID vaccinations.
Today, many pharmacists are working to adopt new services that would benefit their communities such as lab and genetic testing, blood testing, and more. These services were typically offered in a primary care or outpatient setting outside of the pharmacy level, however combining these services into an all-in-one model makes a lot of sense to both the pharmacy and the patient.
With the shortage of physicians, pharmacist will likely become the new point of care setting for many in both rural and urban areas to provide these general services. In addition to value-add services, the pharmacist will be equipped to make higher quality decisions on medication management for the patient.
COVID Vaccine and Adverse Reactions per Condition
As of June 2022, thousands of adverse reactions from the vaccine and/or covid infection have been reported, however this data has been published in a useful way yet. Soon, and only though pharmacy data will we discover the true success rate of the vaccine and possible complications with specific drugs or health conditions. The pharmacy is the only setting that such in-depth pre and post covid data is being captured, therefore making it perhaps the most useful database in regards to better understanding medications and short and long term effects of COVID-19 and the vaccine per patient phenotype.
