Bariatric Data Overview
Bariatric data is perhaps the most detailed type of dataset available because it includes both pre and post op longitudinal data, as well as all referral and specialty results.
Elements of a Bariatric Dataset Pre Op
This includes a minimum of two months pre op with mental and behavioral health consultations, exercise physiology, nutrition, smoking cessation, primary and specialty care evaluations prior to receiving insurance approval. The 2-3 months time is dedicated to proving that the patient is not capable of losing the weight on their own through proper nutrition and exercise intervention.
Elements of a Bariatric Dataset Post Op
After a patient undergoes bariatric surgery (lap band, gastric bypass, sleeve) they are required to follow up with the surgeon for the following six to eight months where intensive monitoring of the patients recovery process and success is measured.
Combing Pre and Post Op Data for Bariatric Surgery
Bariatrics is unique when it comes to healthcare data and is perhaps the only true alternative to combating diabetes as well as other complications derived from being morbidly obese. The longitudinal data for a single patient showcases the entire lifespan from day 1 to the rest of the patients life, as most patients will continue to be seen until death due to the complications involved such as gastric reflux. The bariatric surgeon essentially then becomes a bariatric patients primary doctor and assists with all conditions and medications for that patient because the anatomy of the patient has changed so much that a general practitioner is no longer a suitable or knowledgeable caregiver for these patients.
